Description
Introduction to nanotechnology/nanoscience and nanomaterials as they relate to the student’s areas of specialization and research (graduate MS or PhD research). Students will practice presenting, critically discussing, and analyzing the basic principles of nanotechnology/nanoscience; apply nanoscience theories to solve problems; and analyze nanoscience journal articles, evaluating conclusions reported in these publications through class presentations. Major topics include: (1) General understanding of structure-function relationship and nanotechnology/nanoscience terminology; (2) History of nanotechnology/nanoscience; (3) Characterization methods in nanoscience utilizing light, electrons, synchrotron radiation/X-rays; (4) Fabrication methods in nanoscience; (5) Work environment in nanoscience including clean rooms, glove boxes, and vacuum conditions; (6) Materials in nanoscience including plasmonic, excitonic, supramolecular, polymeric, surfaces, and interfaces; (7) Nanomedicine including diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment.
