Global Studies in Culture and Society since 1492

This course explores the world after 1492 from a global perspective using texts, visual and/or material culture to examine ideas, religions, artistic and literary genres, philosophies, or historical events that shaped and defined pre-modern cultures and societies. Students will be introduced to the ways that scholars have examined these topics and how such topics can be approached from an interdisciplinary perspective and by drawing different types of evidence together for analysis. This course aims to encourage students to examine the cross-cultural, political, social, and economic connections between different civilizations that were connected through trade, migration, warfare, and empire on a global scale. The exact topics, evidence, and approaches discussed will vary from semester to semester, based on the instructor’s expertise and training.
