This course considers how premodern cultures have been remembered, debated, refashioned, and deployed in political, social, ethnic, and cultural contexts from the early modern to more recent periods. Some topics may include Colonial America’s or other revolutionary conceptions of the Roman Republic, fascist and authoritarian (mis)interpretations of the ancient Mediterranean, regional histories of archaeology, and dialogues with ancient philosophies in recent intellectual history.
