Description

This course explores key historiographical turns in the study of the Mediterranean world between ca.1500-1800, with particular attention to culture, politics, religion, and commerce. Emphasis will be placed on relations between populations on the Mediterranean Sea's European, African, and Asian shores. Among the topics we will consider are cross-cultural encounters and conflicts; state development and imperial formations; diplomacy; piracy and captivity; mobility, displacement, and refugee experiences; commercial networks; material culture; and Muslim-Christian-Jewish relations.
