This course examines the advent and efflorescence of print culture in Europe and the ways in which it shaped the Renaissance and Reformation, the globalization of European mercantile communities and empires, the formation of the state and the public sphere, as well as the production and transmission of new knowledges and information worldwide. Topics may include debates about the historic importance of the press and printed matter, reading and readers' communities, devotional literature and new religious cultures, ephemera and society, the beginnings and proliferation of news, the press and governance, religious and state forms of censorship, scientific literature and illustration, the age of criticism and the business of Enlightenment, piracy and intellectual property, as well as print and revolution.
