The course will examine the commercial, fiscal, and monetary history of the Middle East, and their influence on everyday life and communitarian relations in the multi-ethnic/linguistic societies and urban fabrics of the region. Topics may include tax farming and the state; relations between ports and their hinterlands; trade and the global markets; the role of credit and banking in the economy and society; and theparticipation of local and foreign capital in urbanization and the development of infrastructure and related sectors.
