Description

This course examines different interpretations of U.S. and Soviet intervention the Middle East, Persian Gulf, and the Horn of Africa after World War II, as well as the role of local actors, including Nasser, Sadat, Qhadafi, Arafat, and the Shah of Iran, among others. Topics include how the superpower conflict in the Middle East influenced the intra-Arab conflict, the Israel/Palestine conflict, shifting alliances among Arab regimes, and revolutionary events in Libya, Ethiopia, Iran and Yemen. Readings will also include the growing literature on the role of non-stateactors, including Palestinian activists, student movements, and freedom fighters.
