This course looks at the history of medicine, disease, and public health in the Middle East and North Africa under colonial and postcolonial regimes. It will pay particular attention to the rise of medical schools and professionalization of practitioners; changing understandings of disease transmission and treatment; relations between the environment and bodily afflictions; and infant mortality, childbirth, and population control.
