Social Justice Public Scholarship

This course introduces students to the myriad ways in which public scholarship and social justice intersect. Interdisciplinary by design, students examine, analyze, and reflect on a range of scholars, artists, and activists who are committed to the vision of a more just world through their community-engaged, or public-facing work. The course will expose students to the principles of accessibility, equity, reciprocity, self-representation, and non-extractive models of research in creating community-engaged work through the analysis of case studies. It will draw upon methodologies in public art, oral history, story-telling and ethnography, digital humanities, historical geography, public history, participatory action research, and cultural heritage work with special attention to race, gender, and class. In the course, students will learn how to design and put into practice the framework for a successful public-facing, and/ or community-engaged research project.
