Course Title
Qualitative Research Approaches
Department(s)
Description
This course provides students with an understanding of the methodological approaches we commonly think of as qualitative, including research methods in the humanities (e.g., archival methods, oral history, auto/biography, visual methodologies, discourse analysis) and in the social sciences (e.g., ethnography, semi-structured interviews, case studies, mixed methods, historical and comparative research). The course will cover the basic techniques for collecting, interpreting, and analyzing qualitative (i.e., non-numerical) data. Throughout the semester, the course will operate on two interrelated dimensions: one focused on the theoretical approaches to various types of qualitative research, and the other focused on the practical techniques of data or archival collection, such as identifying sources (informants or archives), selecting original materials or respondents, collecting field notes or oral histories, conducting interviews, analyzing data, writing, and presenting findings, etc.
