Description
This course will provide an overview of applied statistics as applied to social scientific research. The broad focus of this course will be on issues related to the implementation of applied quantitative research methods in the area of the social sciences. The course will focus directly on the mechanics associated with moving through a series of standard quantitative research projects while touching on theoretically relevant topics along the way. On a week-by-week basis, the course will focus on the acquisition, management, and analysis of available secondary quantitative data while introducing students to relevant coding environments for the completion of these tasks. The topics covered include single-variable data description (measures of central tendency, variability, and graphing), fundamentals of inferential statistics (probability and the normal curve, samples and populations, hypothesis testing), and associations between two variables (ANOVA, Chi-square, correlation, and bivariate linear regression analysis). The course will introduce students to statistical software packages for analyzing social science data. No prior knowledge of statistics is necessary.
