Qualifying Paper Seminar I

Description

This is the first semester of a year-long seminar. This year-long seminar is an opportunity to conduct original research that will result in an article (i.e., The Qualifying Paper) that is of publishable quality in a peer-reviewed academic journal or an equivalent publication. This seminar is required of all second-year BRES Ph.D. students. Over the course of two semesters, students will formulate a research question or creative/literary project, develop a theoretical argument or central thesis, design research or writing strategy, collect and analyze data, interpret the results, and present their argument and findings in a precise and compelling narrative form. At the end of the Fall term, students will hand in a clearly developed research proposal or a research plan. At the end of the Spring term, students will hand in a complete research paper that is based on original research or a literary project. This draft will form the basis for a peer-reviewed article for scholarly submission. The article can be a creative, literary, theoretical, or empirical project as long as it is deemed to be of publishable quality by the Ph.D. student’s home discipline.
