THE PROGRAM
LGBTQ Studies centers the exploration of histories, theories, and cultures as well as the study of sexuality and its role in the deployment of cultural and social power within local, national, and global contexts. The primary goal of the Advanced Certificate in LGBTQ Studies is to train interdisciplinary transnational scholar-activists, giving them the theoretical foundations, praxis strategies, and investigative tools for deep critical inquiry and critique of dominant mainstream perspectives as they relate to LGBTQ topics. Students will develop the capacity to contribute to conversations spanning diverse fields of study and professions.
Students taking courses within the Advanced Certificate in LGBTQ Studies will have access to the resources provided by CLAGS: The Center for LGBTQ Studies. CLAGS is the first university-based LGBTQ research center in the United States centering the concerns and priorities of the LGBTQIA+ community. Through its activities, CLAGS creates a community-building space for scholar-activists, artists, policymakers, and community members aimed at increasing knowledge, awareness, and action for social change. Students will be able to access robust public programming, access to internships and fellowships, an extensive network of preeminent scholars and mentors in LGBTQ Studies, and the rich material and digital CLAGS Archives located in the Mina Rees Library. Students will be afforded opportunities to engage with local, national, and global leading LGBTQ organizations and educational centers throughout the CUNY system.
The Advanced Certificate Program in LGBTQ Studies courses are open to individuals that apply and are admitted to the program as well as matriculated Graduate Center students irrespective of their enrollment in the Advanced Certificate Program in LGBTQ Studies.
