THE PROGRAM
The Public Scholarship Certificate Program makes good on the mission of the Graduate Center (GC) of the City University of New York (CUNY) that "Knowledge is a Public Good.” We train graduate students to prioritize the following outcomes:
Community. Students are introduced to the work of a variety of scholars and practitioners past and present in activist, applied, and engaged research, including work that comes from within CUNY
Methodologies. Students are trained in interdisciplinary, non-extractive models of research and community engagement that combine theory and praxis, and that prioritize the analysis of race, ethnicity, gender, and class through a social justice model
Dissemination. Students share their research through a variety of formats including but not limited to oral histories, digital projects, walking tours, public programs, exhibits etc.
Audience. Students will be able to communicate their graduate research to, and engage with, a variety of publics.
The Public Scholarship Certificate Program is open to all matriculated Graduate Center students. Candidates for the Advanced Certificate must complete a total of 4 courses (12 credits) in Public Scholarship: PUBL 70100 Introduction to Public Scholarship: Theories, Methods, and Approaches (3 credits); PUBL 70200 Social Justice and Public Scholarship (3 credits); and, two additional electives from a list of approved courses (6 credits), upon approval by the Coordinator.
RESOURCES FOR RESEARCH AND TRAINING
Since its founding in 1961, the CUNY Graduate Center has long championed and produced scholarship engaged with, and for, the public(s). Here are just some of the initiatives within the GC and beyond that can support your community-engaged, and/or public-facing work as a student in the certificate program: Center for the Humanities including PS2, Center for the Study of Women and Society, Career Planning and Professional Development which runs IDS 81620: Scholarly Praxis at Work in the World, CLAGS, IRADAC, New Media Lab, The Public Science Project, Teaching and Learning Center, Writing Center which runs PDEV 79406 Public Writing for Academics, as well as the Mina Rees Library where we have a dedicated subject faculty librarian for the program.
